Question.

Whenever I watch a Korean show, I often hear people say 계란 When they say eggs but the PD or subtitles often translate it to 달걀. When do you use which or can it just be used interchangeably?

Answer.

Both '계란' and '달걀' are eggs, but 계란 is comes from Chinese characters. '계' maens chicken, '란' means egg.

Meanwhile, '달걀' comes from '닭의 알', pure Korean word, which is egg of chicken. It is similar to 'be lated' being a word like 'belated'.

They are all frequently used words, but I think '계란' is easy to pronounce. Also it is more formal than the other.
